KCB FC claimed a vital three points in a fiercely contested Nairobi derby on Sunday evening, beating Sofapaka 2–1 in a match that captured everything compelling about KPL football: fine margins, tactical chess, and the kind of atmosphere that only a city rivalry delivers. The Bankers rise to sixth; Sofapaka drop a place and into the lower half.
Sofapaka's low block frustrates for an hour
Sofapaka arrived at Camp Toyoyo with a clear game plan: sit in a low 4–5–1 block, invite pressure, and threaten on the counter. For 60 minutes it worked almost perfectly. KCB had 68 percent possession but could find no way through a compact, disciplined defensive unit. The first half ended goalless, with KCB's frustrated passes drawing whistles of discontent from their own supporters.
Mwangi breaks the deadlock, Sofapaka respond
Peter Mwangi finally found the breakthrough on the hour, receiving a lay-off on the edge of the box and driving a low effort through a forest of legs and into the bottom corner. Sofapaka responded bravely, equalising eleven minutes later through substitute Ochieng, who headed home from a corner to send the travelling contingent into jubilation.
The match looked set for a point apiece until Samuel Otieno composed himself superbly in the 88th minute, bringing down a long ball, spinning his marker, and finishing calmly past the advancing goalkeeper. The three points were KCB's — hard earned and deserved on the balance of the contest.
